How do you choose the right garage door company?

You are getting ready to leave for work and your garage door wont open.  You go online and your search begins, you call the first couple of companies you see and might get a little discouraged.  There are many garage door companies on Google, Yelp, Yellow Pages, etc, but how do you choose the right one?  You’ve already been inconvenienced by not getting out of your garage, so why not take some time and research, browse Google and also go beyond the first page.  There are so many great and honest garage door companies in your area, here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing the best garage door company for your needs.

    • Beware of excessive advertising.  The top position on Google doesn’t necessarily indicate a reputable company.  Sometimes, heavy advertising can indicate the opposite.  Beware of low offered discounts, same day services, phony-looking testimonials, and those under $30 service fees.

    • What is their business name? Do they answer the phone by their business name? If a company answers its phone strangely, ask them, “What company is this?”  Many unethical companies operate under several names so they can get more phone calls and make it difficult for customers to track them down later. Make sure that their name on their Google listing matches the name on their website. If it looks shady, call someone else.

    • Keep it local!  Look for a local address and phone number, not an 800 number, a local company should have at least one contact number with an area code.  Unfortunately, there are quite a few companies stating they are local but based out of a different state.  There are many great companies that are not too far from you, if you can’t keep it close to your hometown, then at least keep it in your state.

    • Are they insured? You wouldn’t hire an electrician who doesn’t carry insurance to change all your wiring, would you?  Your garage door is the single largest moving part in your home and is used multiple times per day at any hour and in all seasons, regular maintenance is important.  Hire a trained, and insured, professional to get the job done right

    • Quote around: Shop around for prices, we encourage it, as the old cliché saying goes “if it seems to good to be true, than it probably is”.  Ask about all the fees and what it includes, ask if there are any hidden costs,  ask about warranties. The majority of local companies prices are going to be competitive and almost comparable.  Find out what you are spending your money on.

    • Read the reviews:  What are people saying about them? Most people prefer to share their experiences, good and bad, with the public. Not all companies are going to have a five star rating, you cannot please everyone, look at the pattern of reviews. Do they have similar experiences?

    • Ask family and friends.  You can always count on them to share their experiences.  Maybe you recall them talking about services performed on their garage door just recently. Whatever the case, ask around.

Asking the right questions can save you a lot of trouble in your search. There are many honest, local garage door companies in your area, find one right for you!
